Refugee Health Program
What We Do
The Foreign-born/Refugee Health Program works in partnership with local resettlement agencies (primarily Exodus and Catholic Charities), Welcome Corp (such as private sponsors and BACI), the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH), FSSA, and healthcare providers to provide eligible clients with culturally and linguistically appropriate health screenings, assessments and referrals. The program serves primary and secondary refugees, asylees, parolees, victims of human trafficking and individuals seeking to become permanent U.S. residents.
Our mission is to provide medical screening and care to all eligible clients, which promotes disease prevention, meets clients’ immediate healthcare needs, and provides continuity as clients transition to long-term primary care.
Our vision is that all eligible clients will have access to preventive and curative medical care that contributes significantly to their health and well-being, as well as to the public health of their new communities.

A two-step health screening is provided to all eligible clients. An initial visit occurs within 30 days of the client’s U.S. arrival. Two to three weeks later, the client meets with a Family Medicine Physician or a Family Nurse Practitioner. Screenings are based on CDC’s Domestic Refugee Health Medical Screening Guidelines and include:
- a review of the client’s health history
- physical examination
- diagnostic tests including several for communicable diseases of public health importance
- immunizations
- appraisal of mental health and social service needs
- referrals to healthcare providers for ongoing medical care, evaluation and follow-up.

Individuals who are seeking to adjust their status to permanent residency can schedule an appointment to be seen by a civil surgeon by calling 317.221.2115 or emailing CivilSurgeon@MarionHealth.org.
