Safe and Sound for Life: Social & Emotional Health and Safety
What It’s About
Safe and Sound for Life is offered to students in grades 7 and 8, and teaches self-awareness — providing them with the skills to be socially and emotionally healthy and safe.
Lesson plans include management strategies for stress, communicating clearly and effectively, how to seek help for self and others, and bullying (including cyber bullying).
Like many other topics, it is important for students to talk to trusted adults when they feel they are experiencing a dangerous situation or conflict. Parents, families, and guardians are encouraged to be a part of the student’s experience and establish trust and open communication about these serious topics.
Content of the curriculum also includes teaching the students about recognizing signs of depression and getting help for themselves or others. There are 11 total classes in this program. Skills that students will gain on completion of this program include:
- Listening
- Expressing emotions and thoughts
- Empathy
- How to use “I” Statements
- How to manage strong feelings
- Problem solving
- Conflict resolution
- Avoiding dangerous situations
- Knowledge on how to help others
- Choosing positive relationships
- Ability to access useful resources
